Opening day dawned 25
degrees with dusting snow adding to the already 6 and a half inches from
the week before. There had been plenty of rain that changed to heavy wet
snow clinging to the trees. When the temperature dropped it stuck tight
but the swamps were insulated from the cold by the snow and did not freeze.
Makes for very wet feet. The day passed with several deer seen but nothing
on the pole until Charlie bagged his dandy 6 pointer from his stand around
4 pm. Typically for J.C.; he emptied his clip at a T-zone doe and had none
left when the monster Buck ran within 25 feet of him. Jack took a "poke
and hope" at a buck right at the close of shooting hours. The iron sights
on his trusty 35 Remington are awful tough to see in the low light. (or
maybe it's just age. It is an old gun) Robert had a spike sneak up behind
him in the snow but it beat a hasty retreat when he clicked the safety
off. (plenty loud at 15 feet)
The word around town was that the deer were all up in the hardwoods so that was the plan for day two. More flaky stuff and 20 degrees dampened the crack of dawn enthusiasm except for Manly who braved the elements and just ended up cold. Actually it was a good thing because the poker game broke up at 3 am with Mike enough ahead to buy a tank of fuel. Temke et al had made the Argonne run with results best left undisclosed. ("Don't bet on it!") Suffice to say the day ended at noon with the Packer game at Lloyds, after Scott passed on a T-zone deer walking at 35 yards. The hard core hunters hit the woods again after the game and it paid off for Travis who brought home a great 5 pointer to hang on the pole. J.C. did it again with a nubbin buck off the shack road on the way in.
Day 3 and a lot of the crew had gone back. Rex made it up, as did Ralph, and Fuzzy Alderton hunted with us. 25 degrees and broken overcast. The wind picked up in the afternoon and it got really bitter. The up side is that the shack road is tightening up. Several deer seen but nothing legal to shoot at except the buck that suprized the driving crew while they were waiting for the standers to set up.
Later in the season Mike Temke
found the brother to JC's although it *was* 12 lbs heavier. (Actually between
them they might have a decent Sub sandwich)
Chucky also got a good poke
at one with his muzzleloader up on the still house road.

Jake Matuszewski shot his first deer on the day before
closing while hunting with his Grandpa Pete. Pete said Jake was cool, calm
and collected and just up and shot it, while he was all gitchy and vibratin'.
Goes to show you are never too old for "Buck Fever".

Quite a few of the crew came back for the late T-zone hunt and we are waiting for the picture from that. All and all, the 2000 season was not as good as most, but a good time was had by all. The DNR didn't quite get the kill they expected even with the extra T-zone hunts, so there should be some left for next year.
See you then!!
